Project Title: Exploring the Reverse Cholesterol Pathway Along the Spectrum of Type 1 Diabetes Stages

Project Summary:
Lipid abnormalities are apparent in type 1 diabetes, but the temporal or causal relationship to the decline in beta-cell function and glycemic control is not fully understood. The current paradigm suggests that hyperglycemia is the primary driver of dyslipidemia in type 1 diabetes, however there is emerging understanding that developing or pre-existing lipid abnormalities affect beta-cell function. The HDL lipoprotein class is of particular interest as total HDL levels are higher in type 1 diabetes, but changes in HDL composition impair function and participation in key metabolic pathways.
