Project Title: Evaluating Smartphone-Based Gamification for Smoking Cessation
Project Summary: Smokers are increasingly turning to their smartphones for assistance with quitting. While some smartphone-based cessation interventions have been found to be effective, participant retention in these programs tends to be low. This study aims to develop and evaluate as part of a randomized pilot trial a smartphone app that uses gamification to enhance an automated texting intervention for smoking cessation. Gamification, designed explicitly to increase motivation and enjoyment, may be a promising adjunct that is likely to appeal to the large number of smokers who already play smartphone-based games.
