Project Title: Palliative Care Needs of People Living at Home with Severe Dementia
Project Summary: Severe dementia is debilitating, progressive, and terminal. Symptoms and behaviors of dementia syndromes place a profound burden on families, the health care system, and society. Palliative care is an interdisciplinary approach focused on improving quality of life for people living with serious illnesses and families by managing symptoms and other sources of distress. Surprisingly, few people with dementia receive palliative care despite consensus about its appropriateness and likely benefit. The proposed study will address critical knowledge gaps by quantitatively and qualitatively defining the needs, experiences, and values of home-dwelling people with severe dementia and their caregivers.
